Upcoming eco-movies -- ''Medicine Man,'' ''FernGully,'' and ''Troppo'' are some films set to hit the big screen

FernGully: The Last Rainforest

In The Naked Gun 2 1/2 Leslie Nielsen, as Lieut. Frank Drebin, wages war against coal, oil, and nuclear power companies and then announces: ”I want to be known as the environmental police lieutenant.” Earlier this year, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles battled toxic dumping in their second feature, The Secret of the Ooze. These days, Hollywood movies aren’t fading to black but to green. With the fight to save the earth’s environment so politically correct, Hollywood has a slew of ”eco movies” in the works:

Medicine Man
Sean Connery is a biochemist who conducts his research in the Brazilian rain forest. (December)

FernGully: The Last Rainforest
This animated musical fantasy, based on the children’s book by Diana Young, finds natives of the rain forest facing destruction. (1992)

Dennis Quaid stars in this story set in the South Pacific of the ’50s, where nuclear testing, among other things, threatens the natives. (In development)

Chico Mendes Biography (currently untitled)
Playwright William Mastrosimone (Extremities) is scripting this David Puttnam production about the murdered Mendes, who was working to save Brazil’s rain forests from land developers. (In preproduction)

Sam LaBudde Biography (currently untitled)
Oliver Stone (The Doors) is working on this true story of LaBudde, who fought to stop tuna fishermen from killing dolphins. (In development)

Sylvester Stallone is featured in this action-adventure set in the 21st century, when the world is doomed by noxious air. (Not scheduled)

Steven Seagal is a lean, green, enviro-fighting machine who’s out to save the world. (In development)
