Films about Bugsy Siegel -- Three movies about the mobster who created Las Vegas will be coming out soon
A quick quiz for movie buffs: When was the last time Hollywood made three movies in one year about the same person?
Answer: Never, until now. This year three films feature Bugsy Siegel, the mobster who created Las Vegas. Hollywood’s affinity for Bugsy shouldn’t be a mystery — he had cultivated many Hollywood friendships before he was showered with bullets in his Beverly Hills home in 1947. Who’s the best Bugsy? Here’s a tout sheet:
Armand Assante, who managed to turn the killer into comic relief in The Marrying Man, will get points for difficulty from the few who saw the movie.
Richard Grieco’s young-hunk reading of the gangster in Mobsters has a lock on the affections of teenage girls.
And the granddaddy of them all, due at Christmas, is Warren Beatty’s Bugsy, focusing on Siegel’s later Vegas period. This is considered the Bugsy to beat.
”It’s really comical,” says Mobsters producer Steve Roth of the multiple Bugsys — and he was planning yet another film based on Siegel, with Andy Garcia. ”That was before Beatty blew us out of the water. But I still think I have the best-looking killer of the bunch.”
