The Best of America's Funniest Home Videos

Even if you’ve watched only one episode of the incredibly popular TV series compiling camcorder-captured snippets of human pratfalls, you’ve probably formed an inflexible opinion of it that will be the deciding factor for whether or not you want The Best of America’s Funniest Home Videos. Still, a few things about the home video transmutation of these home videos are worth noting. The sheer volume of clips here is such that if one or two don’t make you laugh, you’re more of a churl than most critics. The format also points up how many of the gags would fall flat without host Bob Saget’s wisecracking narration. And the reluctance of the show’s producers to tamper with their proven formula creates some weird effects, like the laugh track and the frequent cuts to a convulsed studio audience whom Saget, here enlisted to engage buyers and renters, never addresses. The tape clocks in at 35 minutes but seems shorter, even if you’re not enjoying it. B-
