Pure Schuur

Jazz vocalist Diane Schuur can frequently be found on The Tonight Show, singing standards with Doc and the boys. And rightly so: As her sixth GRP album demonstrates, good-natured studio-cat jazz is what this two-time Grammy winner does best. On Pure Schuur, both contemporary ballads and classics like ”Unforgettable” get the full benefit of her powerful pipes (lush in mid-range if a bit howly on top). A great vocal stylist she’s not: The subtle, insouciant phrasing, icy virtuosity, and/or raw emotionalism of the great jazz divas is conspicuously absent here. What you get instead is straight, honest singing, and if it’s not exactly Sarah Vaughan, it ain’t chopped liver, either. B
