Meditations was a neglected ’55 session and a breakthrough for Hope, one of the most gently melodic pianists to explore the style of his childhood friend Bud Powell, primary mover of bebop piano. In this recital of standards and originals, played by a trio, the intensity associated with bop is submerged by Hope’s cool lyricism and rolling swing. His approach combined classical training, a long apprenticeship with rhythm & blues bands, and experiences in swing orchestras, as well as bop. Bright and airy on the surface, his playing packs a punch. A-
