Workman is a virtuoso bassist whose music never stands still, and this live recording runs the gamut from arcane poetry-and-jazz to ingenious free improvisation. In the longest piece, vocalist Jeanne Lee sings, acts, and elaborates on the poetic conceits of choreographer Maya Milenovic (Workman’s wife), inspired by a Picasso painting. It’s alternately weird and funny, but Lee and the kinetic ensemble (which includes clarinetist Don Byron and pianist Marilyn Crispell) waft you along beyond the worries of interpretation into the erotics of sound. The other pieces on Images are inspired by Euripides and Samuel Beckett but need no annotations; they are purely musical, despite some contagious cackling on ”Jus’ Ole Mae.” B+
