Best of the Stray Cats/Rock This Town

Decked out in tattoos and pompadours, New York’s Stray Cats souped up ’50s rockabilly and roared into the ’80s pop mainstream on only a guitar, a stand-up bass, and a snare drum. Appropriately produced using nothing fancier than an echo chamber, the trio’s infectious records bristle with harmless hell-raising and Brian Setzer’s exceptional guitar work. Unfortunately, the inadequate Rock This Town reduces the group’s four American LP’s to 10 terse tracks (none from 1986’s fine Rock Therapy), offering a slim selection of both essential (and inexplicable) album cuts alongside ”Runaway Boys” and other chart hits.
