In a Different Light

Harvie Swartz has recorded a carefully crafted series of albums that allow players associated with jazz fusion to improvise with rare autonomy. The concept behind the bassist’s latest and best effort in In A Different Light is simple enough: duets and trios with five guitarists, supplemented by drums. Nearly half the album is given over to a knockout session by Swartz, drummer Winard Harper, and guitarist Mike Stern. Stern was slammed by critics (including me) for his heavy riff-laden blasting with Miles Davis’ band in the ’80s, but here he proves himself a provocative stylist with an irresistibly plush sound. A
