Lonesome Val

Considering the glitzy swill coming out of Nashville nowadays, it’s refreshing to hear crisp country drumming and whining pedal steel used in less-stylized productions. New York singer-songwriter Val Haynes has a twangy voice and plenty of country-rock feeling, but after the exuberant ”To Be Young,” her debut album settles down like a small town on Sunday night. Where it should kick up its heels, Lonesome Val just drifts along politely, another city slicker heading down the wrong road. C
