He wasn’t the band’s lead singer and he didn’t go on to form a supergroup with Stills and Nash, but Gene Clark was nonetheless a crucial member of the Byrds. Made timely by the recently released Byrds boxed set, this reissue of Clark’s 1967 solo album, Gene Clark With the Gosdin Brothers, is a reminder of his contribution to the group’s pioneering folk-rock. Several songs take after the early Beatles’ Elvis/Carl Perkins side; others resemble the countryish Byrds, minus Bob Dylan. Though dated, this album is good solid fun. B-
