Web of Deceit

In Web of Deceit, Linda Purl (Matlock) plays a defense attorney who returns to her hometown of Atlanta to defend a young auto mechanic (Paul de Souza) accused of rape and murder and rekindles a romance with an old boyfriend (James Read). It turns out he’s prosecuting the mechanic, and their love affair is strained by their professional rivalry. Unlike In Defense of a Married Man, which uses its unlikely coincidences with cagey irony, Web emphasizes the florid emotionalism of every scene. Read is a stiff, but Purl is first-rate, and de Souza makes an extremely convincing sap caught up in a vicious crime. C
