Bebop lovers won’t want to miss The Bud Powell Trio Plays. Powell, the most influential pianist in the generation after Tatum’s, recorded his finest trio music between 1947 and 1954 for the Roulette, Verve, and Blue Note labels, but the Roulettes have been unavailable for many years. A 1947 session captures the tortured genius (whose life inspired the film ‘Round Midnight) in a uniquely graceful, lyrical period. His prototypical bop romp, ”Bud’s Bubble” is played with an ebullience that gives little evidence of the introversion that characterized his later work, captured here in a 1954 session replete with heartrending ballads.
