Supernatural boss: Scooby-Doo crossover is not the work of Gabriel

As EW previously revealed, the upcoming Supernatural-Scooby-Doo crossover comes about when Sam and Dean are sucked into a television. For diehard fans of the show, it’s a premise that’s reminiscent of season 5‘s “Changing Channels,” in which the Winchesters found themselves inside of various television programs (including one that looked a lot like Grey’s Anatomy). And although the boys will have a similar thought, this episode is a little different.

Despite Gabriel’s recent return, the archangel (also known as the Trickster) has nothing to do with the brothers’ introduction to the Mystery Gang. “This episode was written a year before we had the idea to bring [Gabriel] back,” co-showrunner Andrew Dabb tells EW. “There is a reference to Gabriel [in the Scooby episode], however, given the timeline of this, Gabriel is not the cause of this specific adventure.”

Dean Buscher/The CW

Rather, there’s an entirely different monster in charge this time around, and trying to figure that out will be the very mystery that Sam, Dean, and Castiel work with Scooby and the gang to solve.

“Scoobynatural” will air Thursday, March 29 at 8 p.m. ET on The CW.

Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki star as the Winchester brothers, hellbent on battling the paranormal forces of evil.
