Mae Whitman was only four years old when she first made it to the big screen, but she was able to win hearts even then.

On the latest episode of PeopleTV’s Couch Surfing, Whitman discusses her first-ever role, in When a Man Loves a Woman and describes how she landed the role in the Meg Ryan and Andy Garcia led film.

“Apparently during the screen test, they set up some… breakfast food on the table,” the Good Girls actress says. “I, without breaking eye contact with [Andy Garcia], reached over and started slowly eating all the breakfast off the table.… I ended up eating like three plates of food during the thing, and they were like, that was hilarious, she’s hired.”

“That’s my trick every time,” she quips. “I go in and I eat all the food out of the refrigerators and the office. It’s worked for me thus far.”
