Maybe it was the lack of interest in this year’s movie crop, or maybe it had something to do with all of those headlines about his alleged past behavior. Either way, something kept lots of folks away from Ryan Seacrest’s red carpet coverage for E! on Oscar Sunday.
The preshow that was hosted by Seacrest (who routinely tossed it to Giuliana Rancic and company over at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel) lured only 1.3 million viewers — down 35 percent from last year’s audience of 2 million, according to early Nielsen results. To be fair, the ceremony also suffered a significant drop in viewership, too: With a mere 26.5 million viewers, it was the lowest-viewed Oscars in history.
Seacrest did rally on Monday. His post-Oscar episode of Live With Kelly and Ryan earned a 3.0 rating in metered-market households — the show’s best performance since he joined it in May. It was also the most-watched syndicated talk show on Monday.
There was speculation that the stars — especially the female ones — would snub Seacrest on the red carpet in light of allegations that he sexually harassed a former stylist. But nominees did stop… just not a lot of them. For more on Seacrest’s appearance on the red carpet Sunday, click here.
