High Maintenance is currently in its second season on HBO. The show, which started as a series of shorts on Vimeo before moving to the prestige-TV powerhouse, follows an unnamed marijuana dealer (played by Ben Sinclair, who co-created the show with his ex-wife Katja Blichfeld) as he makes deliveries to New Yorkers from all walks of life, often intersecting with their individual stories in surprising ways. In a video interview with EW, Sinclair revealed the inspirations behind some of his favorite High Maintenance customers.
“The characters in the show are all kind of different facets of a time of life I have lived,” Sinclair says in the video above. “My early 20s is really captured in this character named Chad, played by Chris Roberti. He is a manic pixie dream boy, a f— boy for all intents and purposes, but a soft boy also. He lives in a theater, which is true to my life. I lived in a theater when I was 24 to figure out how to live in New York without paying rent, that was kind of exciting. He’s just blissfully maintaining his soft f— boy status. So yeah, I like Chad! I like him a lot.”
Another Sinclair favorite is one of High Maintenance‘s most colorful characters, Heidi (Greta Lee). The character first made her debut in the show’s second Vimeo episode as a young woman who takes advantage of romantic partners’ living situations rather than paying her own rent, and later reappeared in one of the HBO episodes.
“When I think of Heidi and Chad next to each other, they’re both making alternative routes throughout New York that involve not working a 9 to 5 job,” Sinclair says. “She’s the closest thing we have to a mascot for our show.”
