There are typically three reasons people watch the Super Bowl: the game, the halftime show, and the commercials. It’s the latter that people are typically talking about long after the two football teams — this year the Philadelphia Eagles vs. the New England Patriots — have left the field. Those brief 30- and 60-second ads are, many will argue, the real entertainment.

Although protests have caused ratings to decrease over the past couple of years during regular season games, companies are still shelling out the big bucks for a spot to plug their products and services while folks watching at home devour chicken wings and chili and beer and … you get the picture. But true fans know Super Bowl commercials aren’t average promotional tools — they’re well-crafted vessels that deliver messages that stay in the minds of viewers far beyond the fourth quarter.
