Emilia Clarke has a few thoughts for the nudity naysayers.
The Game of Thrones actress, who has filmed her share of graphic nude scenes on the hit HBO show, reflects on how sex scenes and appearing naked on screen aren’t that big of a deal to her in an interview for Harper’s Bazaar‘s December/January 2018 cover — and PEOPLE has your First Look.
“I’m starting to get really annoyed about this stuff now because people say, ‘Oh, yeah, all the porn sites went down when Game of Thrones came back on,’ ” Clarke says. “I’m like, ‘The Handmaid’s Tale?’ I f—ing love that show, and I cried when it ended because I couldn’t handle not seeing it. That is all sex and nudity.”
She continued, “There are so many shows centered around this very true fact that people reproduce. People f— for pleasure — it’s part of life.”
When it comes to having the “right look” as an actress, Clarke says her appearance motivated her to fight against casting stereotypes in Hollywood and London.
“It pushed me into another casting type; forced me to be an actor,” she says of being cast for her talent versus looks. “Instead of playing Juliet and doing the light, airy stuff, I would be the granny who cracks wise, or a down-and-out hooker who has seen better days.”
And beyond earning roles that are further cementing her status as a Hollywood-mainstay — such as a role in next year’s Star Wars spinoff, Solo — Clarke says she’s not completely overtaken with the idea of finding “the one.”
“There is ‘the one’ for particular parts of your life — you change as you get older,” she says. “So when I was in my teens, there was ‘the one’ for my teens, for sure, and then, you know, there’s ‘the one’ for the next time of your life.”
She adds, “There’s this Buddhist philosophy that says you can only really understand yourself through your interactions with other people.”
