Lady Gaga almost played wife to David S. Pumpkins in Saturday Night Live‘s famous Halloween sketch from last season.
As part of Vulture’s oral history of the beloved character played by Tom Hanks, cast members Bobby Moynihan and Mikey Day recalled the many stages the sketch went through before making it to air. The pair wrote it with Streeter Seidell, who was also on hand to discuss.
“When the doors open and it’s just the skeletons, that was originally gonna be us and Lady Gaga,” Moynihan explained, describing the sketch. “Instead of us making sex noises, it would be her.”
Day described their conception of Gaga’s character as appropriately “weird” for the sketch. She’d be wearing “a jacket with witches on it,” and would surprise those in the sketch and the audience by introducing herself as “Mrs. David S. Pumpkins.” Unfortunately, per Seidell, she dropped out because she wanted to focus on her musical performances in the show. (Gaga was the musical guest on the episode, which Hanks hosted.)
“She read it and liked it, but it was just a matter of time,” Day added. “Her musical set was pretty involved.”
Hanks’ turn as David S. Pumpkins on the Oct. 22, 2016 episode of SNL promptly went viral, netting the actor an Emmy nomination for guest acting and leading fans to call for a reprisal of the role. Hanks teased the return of the character before SNL season 43 premiered last month, and it was later announced that it’d take place in the form of an animated short. The half-hour special will air this Saturday.
