Jace has been brought back to life — but it looks like the consequences of his return are going to follow him for a while.
The cast and executive producers of Shadowhunters stopped by New York Comic Con for a panel on Saturday afternoon, and they brought a trailer for season 3 with them. The preview for the new season was followed immediately by news that even the cast and executive producers hadn’t heard before: Freeform has picked up the show for 10 additional season 3 episodes, set to air next summer.
During the panel — which brought together showrunners Darren Swimmer and Todd Slavin, executive producer and director Matt Hastings, and cast members Katherine McNamara, Isaiah Mustafa, Alisha Wainwright, and Matthew Daddario — McNamara teased that things are getting serious for Clary and Jace (Dominic Sherwood) in season 3 in the wake of Jace’s return from death. “They have this secret that they cannot tell,” McNamara said.
The cast and executive producers teased plenty of relationship development across the board this season. In Wainwright’s words, the story will explore what it’s like to “go home with these people.”
Magnus (Harry Shum Jr.) and Alec (Daddario) are back together this season, but that doesn’t mean they’re in for an easy time. “What is happiness?” Daddario teased when asked how happy Alec is. And while he eventually admitted his character is “pretty happy,” he added that there’s an element of stress behind that happiness. “He’s just getting into the more complex aspects of his relationship with Magnus. I’m concerned for him.”
And what of Luke? Mustafa said of his season 3 prospects: “It’s a heck of a hangover.”
Season 3 of Shadowhunters premieres April 3, 2018, at 8 p.m. ET on Freeform.
