Miley Cyrus knows a thing or two about portraying Dolly Parton, her legendary godmother. Cyrus and Parton recorded a duet on “Rainbowland,” off the Younger Now album, and the “Malibu” singer has covered “Jolene” a number of times — once with Fallon when they were busking in NYC and another time with Parton herself. On Wednesday’s The Tonight Show, Cyrus transformed herself into Parton to recreate her “Islands in the Stream” performance. Naturally, Jimmy Fallon, channeled Kenny Rogers, beard and all.
“Good Golly Miss Dolly,” Cyrus wrote on social media in full Parton garb. “Being my own Fairy Godmother today!”
The real Parton and Rogers reunited to perform this song for 2016’s Smoky Mountains Rise: A Benefit for the My People Fund, a telethon from Parton’s Dolly Foundation to raise money for the victims of the wildfires in Tennessee.
Cyrus, who’s spending a week on The Tonight Show, also performed a rendition of “These Boots Were Made for Walking” on the stage and she got a hug from Hillary Clinton, whose presidential bid the singer supported during the 2016 campaign.
In one of Fallon’s “Thank You Note” segments, Cyrus wrote, “Thank you, Hillary, for being a constant beacon of strength, hope, and determination for me and millions of other young women. You’ve been a role model and an inspiration and a voice of reason in uncertain times. I could go on and on, but I’d like to get right to the point: can I give you a hug?”
Clinton then wrote back, “Thank you, Miley, the Tonight Show writers, and all of the women and young girls out there. You are smart, strong, and deserving of every opportunity. Together we’ve made our voices heard, we’ve done great things, and we’ve come along way. But, as Miley would say, we can’t stop and we won’t stop.”
