When ABC’s American Housewife returned for season 2 on Wednesday night, it found Katie Otto (Katy Mixon), “the second-fattest housewife in Westport,” struggling to redeem herself from the events of last season.

“Katie Otto faked a pregnancy and it did not go well for her,” Mixon tells EW. “So in order to win them back, so she’s not the terrible black sheep of the community, she’s gonna do something she hates, which is volunteering. She is gonna volunteer headlining the spring gala.”

As usual for American Housewife, this new experience for Katie reflects the real-life travails of the show’s creator and showrunner, Sarah Dunn. Dunn spent the first season of American Housewife away from her family; now that they’re reunited, she’s also found herself volunteering.

“This year my family moved out here to the west coast, and they just started a new school, and I have already been roped into volunteering for the new school,” Dunn says. “I really spent my entire life avoiding volunteering, the whole time I was a housewife. But already I’m going to this ‘working moms’  thing. That is what Katie is getting roped into! She’s been looking down on moms who are very involved, and she is in our first episode getting roped into being a very involved mom.”

As Katie throws herself into new endeavors, her three children continue to grow as well. Oliver (Daniel DiMaggio) still wants to be rich and successful, which will draw him to a new character played by George Hamilton. Anna-Kat (Julia Butters), long known as Katie’s favorite, will start to seek some independence. And now that Taylor (Meg Donnelly) is getting older, her mother has big plans for her.

“Katy has a big plan to get Taylor a driver’s license as quick as she can, so she can go into ‘mommy retirement,’ where she doesn’t have to do the whole carpool thing anymore,” Mixon says. “You can imagine the shenanigans that ensue.”

Other season 2 story lines will include a new pregnancy for Katie’s friend Doris (Ali Wong), which will inspire some soul-searching among the friends.

Season 2 of American Housewife airs Wednesdays at 9:30 p.m. ET on ABC.
