Better Things star Pamela Adlon reveals Emmy-winning speech she never got to give

Posted on

I am mildly obsessed with Better Things. No show so perfectly demonstrates the true reality of parenting as loving your children more than life itself… even as they drive you completely crazy the majority of the time. The first season on FX was my favorite show of 2016, so I was hoping it would be nominated in the Emmy Awards’ Outstanding Comedy Series category. It wasn’t.

But at least the show’s star and co-creator, Pamela Adlon, was nominated in the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series category. “Oh, cool — maybe she’ll win,” I said to myself. She didn’t. Which I suppose is what I get for talking to myself. In truth, Adlon didn’t prevail because she was up against the Emmy-winning juggernaut known as Julia Louis-Dreyfus.

It’s hard to get too upset over that. JLD is a comedic genius and deserves every award she gets. Still, I would have loved to have seen the little show that could — no comment on Adlon’s height, by the way — get a little awards show love. Plus, I bet she would have given a killer acceptance speech.

So when the Better Things star stopped by EW Morning Live (Entertainment Weekly Radio, SiriusXM, channel 105) Wednesday morning, I asked her to share the speech she never got to give, and she was more than happy to comply. As expected, it is brilliant on many levels. Just listen to the SoundCloud above to see what we all missed out on during the Emmys. Oh, and then go watch Better Things.
