Fake news will make its prime time debut on CBS.

When Madam Secretary returns for its fourth season, the first episode will address the issue of fake news and how it affects Secretary of State Elizabeth McCord (Tea Leoni).

“It’s becoming such a confusing issue so we decided, let’s just break it all down and do a story,” explains executive producer Barbara Hall. “Fake news is not a story that is going away any time soon. We do use the words ‘fake news.’ We show how it happens, where it comes from, and we go beyond the party shouting ‘fake news’ at each other and actually show how fake news is generated, why it is generated and how it is used as a political weapon.”

“There’s definitely a reference on how it takes off on social media,” Hall adds. “We show how social media allows it to be possible, how quickly it moves, and how hard of a thing it is to argue against or deal with when everybody is yelling ‘fake news.'”

The episode is titled “News Cycle.”

Madam Secretary premieres at 10 p.m. Oct. 8 on CBS.
