Big Little Lies was a big winner at Sunday’s Primetime Emmy Awards, winning trophies for Nicole Kidman, Laura Dern, director Jean-Marc Vallée, and for the show itself in the limited series categories. But what about that season 2?
Well, the cast and crew have teased the possibility for months — and again on Sunday. But author Liane Moriarty opened the door a bit backstage at the Emmys after the Big Little Lies wins.
“I’m thinking about it. It’s a beautiful possibility, that’s all I’ll say,” she teased.
That should be music to the ears of the show’s cast. “You already know we’re liars, you shouldn’t trust anything we say. We’re thinking about it, we’re talking about it, we’re discussing it, but nothing definitive yet,” Witherspoon joked backstage.
Added Kidman, “We love playing these roles. Their storylines are so complex and interesting and it would be fantastic if we could continue. But right now, we’re just savoring this moment because this is amazing.”
Said Dern, “Season 2 if we were to do it again — and that was not the intention — I think all the actors feel ecstatic because we love these characters, but that’s up to Liane if she would want to come up with another story.”
Vallée chimed in too: “I’m just like the audience and like these girls and like everyone else, yes it would be great to reunite the team to do it. Are we going to be able to do it? Let’s see what the future will be.”
Before the Big Little Lies Emmy wins, the cast was talking about whatever a season 2 would look like with just as much enthusiasm.
“We want to do it! We love these women and it’s just trying to move pieces and it’s complicated,” said Kidman on the red carpet. “We love that people want us to do it.”
