A doc at Grey Sloan is switching specialities.
Grey’s Anatomy star Jason George has joined the cast of the firefighter-themed Grey’s spin-off, EW has confirmed. The Hollywood Reporter first broke the news.
The 10-episode spin-off, which is supposed to launch out of an episode of Grey’s, will center on a group of heroic firefighters, from the captain down to the newest recruit. It’ll follow the brave men and women as they risk their lives and their hearts — both in the line of duty and off the clock.
George, who will continue as a series regular on the flagship until the spin-off begins production, joined the ABC medical drama in season 6 as anesthesiologist Ben Warren, who was a love interest for Chandra Wilson’s Bailey. The actor didn’t become a series regular until season 12, however, as he also starred on ABC’s Mistresses. The actor, who also starred on Shonda Rhimes’ other short-lived medical drama Off the Map, joins the previously cast Jaina Lee Ortiz on the Grey’s spin-off.
During season 13, Ben, who is now married to Bailey, struggled to find his place, becoming a little too cocky and forcing Bailey to suspend him. But Ben stepped up to the plate in the finale, throwing on a firefighter’s jacket to help locate his fellow docs trapped within the hospital following the fiery explosion — seemingly a hint at this new direction.
Stacy McKee (Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal, and How to Get Away With Murder) will write and executive-produce the spin-off alongside Rhimes, Betsy Beers, and Paris Barclay.
Grey’s Anatomy returns with a two-hour premiere on Thursday, Sept. 28 at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.
