Fox chairman addresses potential How I Met Your MotherEmpire spin-offs

Posted on

The How I Met Your Mother spin-off hit a bump in the road in March when its writers, Isaac Aptaker and and Elizabeth Berger, were promoted to co-showrunners on This Is Us; however, 20th Century Fox TV, the studio behind How I Met Your Dad, is still interested in pursuing the project.

Speaking to Deadline, Fox chairman Dana Walden said that 20th TV is planning on developing a completely new spin-off with a different team and is currently searching for someone to take on the project, which will not feature any ideas from previous iterations. “They will be starting from scratch,” Walden said. “It’s one that’s been slowly cooked. If it’s the right idea the right execution, we’ll take that.”

This will be the third attempt at spinning off the long-running CBS comedy, which ended in 2014. During How I Met Your Mother‘s final season, CBS ordered a pilot for How I Met Your Dad, which was executive produced by the HIMYM creators and starred Greta Gerwig in the lead role. However, the show never made it past the pilot stage.

In the same report, Walden also said that while there haven’t been discussions about a Modern Family spin-off (20th produces the hit ABC comedy, which is expected to end after its 10th season), they have considered pursuing another Empire spin-off if the right idea comes along.

“We’ve had conversations for a full year about a potential spin-off, no one has written it yet,” said Walden. “Ultimately I think if something comes organically out of the show, we’d pursue it. We don’t want to force it on the show because if it doesn’t feel organic it will feel like it will be just a distraction from the flagship. We really believe in the show, we want it to live for a very long time and at a certain point, after one-two seasons, the creators felt that the flagship was the priority and we support that.”
