Much of American Horror Story: Cult‘s plot has been kept relatively under wraps, but star Sarah Paulson dropped a big tease at the Television Critics Association’s press tour on Wednesday.
“There are two women married to each other in that house, but who are they?” Paulson said, referring to a set that reporters had just visited. The Emmy-winning actress then pointed to herself and Alison Pill before dropping the spoiler: “It’s me and Alison.” After Pill feigned shock over the slip, Paulson quickly added: “That may or may not be true.”
As previously revealed, Paulson will play Ally Mayfair-Richards, while Pill will play Ivy Mayfair-Richards, who was seen brandishing a knife in some sort of butchery in the Cult posters. The pairing marks the first time the actresses have worked together. “We’ve known each other for a long time and have never had a chance to work together, so it really is the most exciting to have all of these scenes with the person who I couldn’t respect more and who is so good at acting,” Pill said.
As for what they’ll be facing this season, executive producer Ryan Murphy initially teased the season would have to do with the election and Donald Trump, but somewhat walked back on those statements. “I would say honestly that when Ryan had made the announcement originally that the season would deal with Trump, it’s more about what’s going on in the world around us,” executive producer Alexis Martin Woodall said at TCA. “We talk about the streak of paranoia, and a lot of it launches from that. It’s not what you think it is. As with all good horror and suspense, knowing less is so much more. But it’s an element in our launch point.”
AHS: Cult premieres Sept. 5 on FX at 10 p.m. ET.
