Frank Castle (Jon Bernthal), as Daredevil fans know, isn’t a superhero — he’s a traumatized father who wasn’t afraid to kill. But according to Bernthal, that’s not the Frank they’ll meet in his spin-off series, The Punisher.
“I think with Frank and with the world that he’s very much involved in, he’s a soldier, so I think there will be very much a military component of the show,” he tells EW’s Dalton Ross in the video above. “It will be somewhat centered on that… I think that [the] Frank Castle that was in Daredevil is not in Punisher.”
Costar Deborah Ann Woll, who plays Karen in the Marvel-Netflix universe, also offered up a small tease, calling the series “more grounded” than the others, with a “gritty, real look.” That includes a grittier story for Karen as well, she says: “Frank has a soft spot in Karen’s heart, and certainly with the dark history that Karen has, there are very few people she can share her authentic self with,” Woll explains. “Frank is someone who she could potentially fully open up to.”
