Pablo Escobar may have met his end in the season 2 finale of Netflix’s Narcos, but the cocaine craze he unleashed did not. Fans may have been surprised at Netflix renewing the series for two more seasons after the death of its most famous character, but as the new photos and video teaser for season 3 demonstrate, DEA Agent Javier Peña (Pedro Pascal) still has his work cut out for him, thanks to the new menace of the Cali Cartel (teased in the last line of season 2).
“Cocaine cartels are about succession,” Pena says in the new teaser. “While the whole world was focused on Escobar, Cali became the biggest cocaine cartel in history.”
Season 3 of Narcos comes with the tagline “Rise of a New Empire,” and the latest incarnation of the show will indeed come with a bevy of new players. There’s Gilberto Rodriguez Orejuela (Damian Alcazar), the boss of the Cali Cartel who announces a plan to walk away from the whole business just as Pena enlists American and Colombian agents to bring it all down, and his brother Miguel Rodriguez Orejuela (Francisco Denis), his brother and the brains behind the cartel. Chepe Santacruz Londono (Pepe Rapazote) runs the cartel’s satellite operation in New York, while hitman Pacho Herrera (Alberto Ammann) handles Mexican operations. Miguel’s oldest son David Rodriguez (Arturo Castro) is hesitant about taking a lead role in the cartel, while Cali’s money launderer Franklin Jurado (Miguel Angel Silvestre) ends up putting his wife Christina (Kerry Bishe) in danger. Maybe that’s why the cartel’s head of security, Jorge Salcedo (Matias Varela), decides to prioritize his family’s safety over his bosses. Luckily, Pena will have help in the form of eager new DEA agents Chris Feistl (Michael Stahl-David) and Daniel Van Ness (Matt Whelan).
Season 3 of Narcos hits Netflix September 1. Check out more preview photos below.
