The BBC announced on Twitter Friday that it will reveal the identity of the new star of Doctor Who on Sunday following the conclusion of the Wimbledon Men’s Final tennis match.
Doctor Who currently stars Peter Capaldi as the so-called “Twelfth Doctor.” It has long been known that his last show will be this year’s special Christmas episode, at the end of which his Time Lord will “regenerate” into the “Thirteenth Doctor,” who will be played by a new cast member. A large number of actors have been rumored as possible replacements for Capaldi, including Love Actually star Kris Marshall and Phoebe Waller-Bridge from the TV show Fleabag.
The Christmas episode will also find the show’s current showrunner Steven Moffat handing off to his own successor, Broadchurch creator Chris Chibnall. Moffat recently told EW that even he didn’t know the identity of the actor who will play the Thirteenth Doctor.
“It’s my show right up to the point where Mr. Capaldi regenerates and at that exact moment, the show passes to Chris Chibnall and he worries about the last section of it,” Moffat said of the Christmas episode, which will be broadcast Dec. 25. “And I genuinely — I’m not making it up — I don’t know who it is.”
