Glow actress Betty Gilpin uses character to flip off GOP on Fourth of July

Liberty Belle has a message for Republicans

One Glow actress has a message for the Republican party this Independence Day.

Betty Gilpin shared an image of her on-screen character’s America-loving alter ego Liberty Belle raising her middle fingers in a tweet that directly called out the GOP.

“Liberty Belle wishing the GOP a happy 4th,” she tweeted along with the image, joining the ranks of stars sharing Fourth of July messages on social media.

In the ’80s-set Netflix comedy, Gilpin stars as Debbie Eagan, a washed-up daytime soap opera actress who gets another chance at stardom when she joins the cast of a female wrestling show run by Marc Maron’s Sam Sylvia. Inside the wrestling ring, she goes by Liberty Belle, the paragon of patriotism, and her main rival is the Soviet Union-bred Zoya the Destroyer, a.k.a. Ruth Wilder (Alison Brie).

The first season largely focused on Debbie and Ruth’s fractured friendship, which executive producers Liz Flahive and Carly Mensch told EW they’ll continue to explore this friendship in a potential season 2.

“Female friendships are very, very complicated and it’s a long road. We wanted to signal that we knew that the trauma to that friendship was deep and real, and we’re excited to explore more and keep it in an authentic place,” said Flahive.

The full first season of GLOW is available on Netflix now.
