In an exclusive clip from the season 1 finale of Downward Dog, canine protagonist Martin realizes going it alone is not for him.

Although the titular dog (voiced by Samm Hodges, the show’s writer and co-creator) is fond of complaining about his owner, when he finds himself lost in the woods alone, it dawns on him how much he needs Nan (Allison Tolman) after all.

“Things didn’t quite go as I planned,” says the pampered pooch as he looks around the dark forest. “I guess one of the things I didn’t realize is that there’s no one out here to turn on the lights or, like, fluff up the pillows… Where are the pillows?”

The episode may serve as the series finale for Downward Dog, which will not get a second season at ABC. Hodges announced the cancellation on social media on Friday, writing, “Got the very surprising news that ABC is not moving forward with Downward Dog. They loved it creatively and really wanted to make more, but couldn’t find a financial path to do so.” He added that the show’s creators are committed to finding a new home for the comedy.

The finale airs Tuesday at 10 p.m. ET on ABC.
