Tom Cruise’s 2005 War of the Worlds press tour was quite the rollercoaster. It ranged from him jumping on Oprah’s couch to arguing on Today with Matt Lauer about psychiatry and the use of psychiatric drugs. Now, 12 years later, Lauer is re-creating the interview… but taking on the role of Cruise.
On Thursday’s Watch What Happens Live, host Andy Cohen asked Lauer if they could act out the infamous “glib” interview, with Cohen playing the part of Lauer and the Today host channeling the movie star.
While the topics discussed were the same, things weren’t quite as heated as the original, notably for the compliments “Cruise” kept hurling “Lauer.”
“You are extraordinarily handsome,” Lauer said to Cohen. “You are a great interviewer. You are a fantastic interviewer and I’ve been a fan of yours forever.”

When the re-creation ended, Lauer made sure to defend The Mummy star. “We are friends,” he shared. “I think he got such a bum rap for that. And to be honest, he was a real Mensch after that. He came and he apologized and we had a great time.”
