The actor recalled how series creator Dan Fogelman wrote the butt shot in the script, and he arrived on set to find “flesh-colored patches of cloth and tape” waiting for him. “He wasn’t joking around,” Ventimiglia said. “Like, it’s gonna be like me covering my manhood and, you know, that.”
He also noted that the producers were very polite about clearing the set for him and offering options on what he’d want covering his privates. Colbert was “impressed” when Ventimiglia joked about using a backpack. “Yeah, it’s me and Jon Hamm,” the actor smiled.
While shooting the scene, Ventimiglia said he used the “Terrible Towel” and kept his back to a wall in between takes, though he’d still have awkward encounters with the crew.
Alongside his costars Mandy Moore and Sterling K. Brown, Ventimiglia remarked to EW last year that his famous butt “may pop up again.” He added, “But I’m not gonna be the only nude man on the show.”
This Is Us season 2 will premiere this fall and the first episode will deliver a “huge piece of the puzzle” concerning the events around the death of Ventimiglia’s character, Jack, as Moore and Fogelman teased. The show’s creator noted the answer will play out “over the course of the season,” but “that’s not to say new questions won’t start being asked.”
