Entertainment Weekly is on the scene at ATX in Austin, Texas. Go inside the TV festival with all our coverage, available here.

During the This Is Us panel at ATX, hosted by EW editor Henry Goldblatt, Milo Ventimiglia revealed a thing or two about his experience on the NBC show — and now you can watch the panel in full above.

NBC Entertainment executive Jennifer Salke and This Is Us executive producer Ken Olin also spoke on the Friday panel, where Ventimiglia talked about initially thinking he should play Kevin, the actor son, instead of Jack, the family patriarch.

“At first, I was like, ‘Should I be Kevin?’ Because I’m an actor. So I’m thinking, ‘Well, maybe, no, I’ll be the actor,’” he said. “But then, you know, I’d been a huge fan of not only [creator] Dan Fogelman but [executive producers] John Requa and Glenn Ficarra, and I knew the three of them together, and I believed in what they believed in me.”

“When I dove into Jack, I found this instant connection to a man that felt incredibly familiar even though I don’t have kids and it just felt right,” he added.
