And now for something completely different — Today Will be Different, to be exact. Annapurna Television and HBO announced that following the success of the cable network’s critically lauded Big Little Lies, Julia Roberts is set to produce and star in a limited series based on the Maria Semple novel.
The project, currently in development, will be written by Semple herself (a former writer for TV shows like Arrested Development and Mad About You), adapted from her 2016 book that follows Eleanor Flood (Roberts), “who wakes up determined to be her best self, but then life happens. Taking place over a single day, it’s a rollicking portrait of one woman’s fumbling but valiant attempt to navigate the knotty perils and sly grace of modern life,” according to a press release.
HBO reportedly nabbed the series after a competitive bidding war. Roberts is producing through her Red Om Films label, with Semple and Annapurna’s Megan Ellison and Sue Naegle on board as executive producers. This marks Roberts’ first foray into television since appearing as part of the ensemble cast in the 2014 HBO film The Normal Heart, which garnered her an Emmy nod.
A premiere date and additional casting details have yet to be announced.
