All the unresolved cliffhangers at the end of 13 Reasons Why

If it comes back for season 2, there will be plenty to find out

Posted on

WARNING: This post contains spoilers for season 1 of 13 Reasons Why.

There’s no guarantee 13 Reasons Why will return for a second season, but that doesn’t mean the show would lack material heading into a new batch of episodes. As the book’s author, Jay Asher, told EW, “I’d just like a continuation of all those characters. I’m curious as well. What happens to Clay? How do people react to what Alex did at the very end? What’s going to happen to Mr. Porter? I’d thought of a sequel at some point. I’d brainstormed it, but decided I wasn’t going to write it. So I’d love to see it.”

That’s debatable here at EW, but what’s not is that 13 Reasons Why left a host of loose ends dangling as the final credits streamed on Netflix. Ahead, a look at every major cliffhanger left unresolved.

1. What happened to Alex?

At the end of the penultimate episode of 13 Reasons Why, we learned a young male was being rushed to the hospital as the result of a gunshot wound to the head. Nearly the entire finale passed before the boy’s identity was revealed: it was Alex (Miles Heizer), who was last seen onscreen organizing his closet and hearing from his dad that he wouldn’t need to sit through the deposition. Did Alex attempt suicide? Was he shot by someone else? Will he survive? Those questions loom large at the end of season 1 and finding out the answers seems like a good starting point for where season 2 (if it ever happens) might pick up.

2. Who answered Alex’s phone?

During the finale, Zach (Ross Butler) sent a number of urgent text messages to Alex, only to be told to “please call” and hear from … someone else. Was that Alex’s dad on the other end of the line?

3. What is Tyler planning to do with all those guns?

A second shocking reveal of the season finale was that Tyler (Devin Druid) has been stockpiling an array of weapons, likely as part of a plot to shoot up the school. There were warning signs about Tyler throughout the season — the Peeping Tom school photographer was bullied relentlessly by the jocks and Clay (Dylan Minette) too, who shamed Tyler for violating Hannah’s (Katherine Langford) privacy by circulating a photo of her kissing Courtney (Michele Selene Ang) — but the finale makes clear that he’s yet another Liberty High School student battling serious issues.

4. What is Tyler doing with the photographs of the other kids on the tapes?

Is that Tyler’s revenge list? Did he remove Alex because he stood up for Tyler in the hallway or because Tyler knew Alex had been shot? And if the latter, did Tyler have something to do with it?

5. Will Sheri face manslaughter charges?

When we last saw Sheri (Ajiona Alexus), she turned herself in for knocking down the stop sign on the night of Jeff’s (Brandon Larracuente) accident, leading to his death.

6. Why did Hannah trust Tony so much?

Unhelpful Yoda shared very few scenes with Hannah; they knew each other but rarely seemed to hang out or interact at all. Why did she pick Tony (Christian Navarro) to carry out her posthumous wishes beyond his easy access to a cassette recorder?

7. Is Clay’s tape enough to convict Bryce?

13 Reasons Why comes down forcefully on the side of believing women (and showing the dangers of what happens when people don’t). But if there’s a second season of the show, Bryce’s (Justin Prentice) crimes will have to be dealt with — and despite his confession (which Clay secretly recorded), Hannah won’t be around to defend herself.

8. Where will Justin go?

In keeping with the dark, The Fellowship of the Ring-ish final sequence that fractures the show’s key relationships, Justin (Brandon Flynn) is last seen confronting Bryce about Bryce’s crimes and leaving town with nothing but a few personal belongings, a bottle of vodka, and a handgun.

9. To whom did Hannah mail the second set of tapes?

We see Hannah go to the post office before she dies by suicide to mail the tapes — but we know from Tony that she dropped the cassettes at his house to get the tapes in his possession. Where did the other cassettes go?

10. Are there going to be repercussions for Clay’s mom?

Lainie Jensen (Amy Hargreaves) working on the case when Clay is a suspect/witness never came to a complete head until the very end of the finale. This was a ludicrous conflict of interest that a season 2 would likely have to resolve immediately.

11. What will happen after the Bakers listen to the tapes?

Hannah’s parents (Kate Walsh and Brian d’Arcy James) finally received their daughter’s last words in the finale and the tapes should play a major part in their lawsuit against the school.

12. How fast will Mr. Porter (Derek Luke) get fired?

Very fast or super fast?

13. What will the show do about Hannah?

13 Reasons Why is a story about the life of Hannah Baker and everything that happens onscreen is a result of her death. Without Hannah, what does the series become? Barring a deus ex machina of new tapes, it’s hard to imagine she will play as significant a part in season 2, leaving the show without its main narrative driver and most compelling relationship (the unrequited romance between Clay and Hannah — and the chemistry of Minnette and Langford — provided season 1 with some of its best moments). Show creator Brian Yorkey has a bit of a Veronica Mars problem on his hands: that series was similarly constructed around the death of a young girl during its first season, a case that wrapped up in the finale. And when season 2 rolled around, it was harder to keep the momentum moving forward — Veronica Mars became more outlandish and less interesting as a result. If 13 Reasons Why returns, let’s hope it avoids any bus crashes, narratively and literally.
