Spoiler alert: This post contains spoilers from the March 3 episode of The Vampire Diaries.
For Steroline fans, The Vampire Diaries‘ penultimate episode was all about Stefan and Caroline’s big day, even though it might not have happened how they expected. In an attempt to make Katherine show herself, the happy couple threw together a somewhat last-minute wedding. Needless to say, they weren’t able to wait until June for their big day.
However, the fact of the matter is: They did get married. And for a brief moment, the residents of Mystic Falls got to enjoy a bit of happiness. “I had heard about this June wedding for the first time at Comic-Con,” Paul Wesley said at a press screening of the penultimate hour. “I had no idea what everyone was talking about and I still kind of don’t really know what it’s about… so when they first told me that we were going to have a June wedding, I was like, ‘Oh, cool. We’re paying homage to the fans,’ But yeah it was kind of amazing.”
For Wesley, he says Stefan and Caroline’s fate as a couple was sealed the moment Stefan proposed in the second episode of the season. “If we hadn’t gotten married, I thought it’d be a real twist,” he said. “Julie’s [Plec] way too nice of a person. You know, she wouldn’t do that.”
However, Wesley will admit that he never expected fans to be so passionate about a wedding between Stefan and Caroline. “Stefan and Elena were such the pair for so many years, and I never in a million years thought Caroline and Stefan would end up being equally as powerful as a couple,” he said. “So it was equally surprising to me.”
Let’s just hope the characters enjoyed the moment, because now, thanks to Vicki Donovan returning and ringing the bell, they have much bigger issues to deal with in next week’s finale.
The Vampire Diaries series finale airs Friday, March 10 at 9 p.m. ET on The CW.
