Stephen Colbert has the “big news today out of the Kremlin,” he joked on The Late Show Thursday night: there’s no need for Attorney General Jeff Sessions to recuse himself from any potential Russia investigations, because he already screwed himself over. Though, Colbert used a different expletive.

“You called yourself a campaign surrogate, then you lied under oath that you never met with the Russians,” Colbert noted during his opening monologue. “So you don’t have to recuse yourself. You’ve already f–ed yourself.”

After it was revealed Sessions lied under oath about communications with Russia when he had pre-election meetings with Russia’s ambassador to the U.S., he announced he would recuse himself from any potential investigations relating to the 2016 presidential campaign. “Now Sessions’ office had an explanation — they say that Sessions didn’t lie,” Colbert said. “They say he wasn’t meeting Kislyak as a surrogate, he met with the Russian ambassador in his capacity as a member of the armed services panel.”

As he joked, that’s like saying, “Honey, I wasn’t having sex with her as your husband, I was humping her in my capacity as a member of the armed services panel. Totally different.”

Elsewhere, the host mocked Sessions with a look inside his day planner, which included notes like, “Make mix-tape for Russian ambassador — include Demi Lovato!!”
