The season premiere of Who Do You Think You Are? focuses on Courteney Cox’s investigation into her maternal line. And where does that investigation lead her? Into royalty.

And into… murder.

To be clear, she doesn’t kill anyone on the TLC series. But when she starts tracing her English lineage through a family tree, things do turn intense. She learns that her 18x great grandfather was Thomas de Berkeley, a lord of Parliament who informed King Edward III of the death of his father, the former king, Edward II. In the episode, Courteney travels to the oldest inhabited castle in England, which was Berkeley’s home, where she discovers Edward II was being held there against his will. Crazier yet, her 18x great grandfather and 19x great grandfather were suspects in his murder, which may have involved smothering him with featherbeds and inserting a hot iron into his bowels and… well, it’s a lot to take in, as you can see in this first look clip from the episode, which airs Sunday at 10 p.m. ET/PT.

Who Do You Think You Are?, which is executive-produced by Cox’s former Friends co-star Lisa Kudrow, also will feature such celebs as Jessica Biel, Julie Bowen, and John Stamos this season.
