Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. had no plans of bringing Bill Paxton back on the ABC super series, sources tell EW.

Paxton, who died Saturday due to complications from surgery, appeared in six episodes of S.H.I.E.L.D. during the first season as John Garrett, a longtime agent who was actually Ward’s (Brett Dalton) training officer.

(SPOILERS AHEAD) When Hydra was revealed to have long infiltrated S.H.I.E.L.D., it was uncovered that Garrett was actually Hydra and the season’s big bad, the Clairvoyant — using high-level security access to gain classified intel, Garrett made it appear as though he could see the future.

While Garrett died in the season 1 finale, S.H.I.E.L.D. recently introduced the Framework, a Matrix-like digital world in which Hydra actually reigns supreme. Dalton, in fact, will be reprising his role as the late Grant Ward during the third part of the season. Some speculated that Paxton, who had starred on CBS’ Training Day reboot before his untimely death, could have returned as well. Alas, that was not the case.

Marvel released a statement Sunday paying tribute to Paxton: “Marvel is deeply saddened by the loss of Bill Paxton; his contributions to the Marvel Universe will be remembered fondly.”

Many S.H.I.E.L.D. cast members also paid tribute to Paxton, including Clark Gregg, Ming-Na Wen, Dalton, Elizabeth Henstridge, and executive producer Maurissa Tancharoen.

Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will return Tuesday, April 4 at 10 p.m. ET on ABC.
