For Friday Night Lights fans, the relationship between Matt Saracen and his grandmother is one they’ll always cherish. And during season 1, there was one particular moment that proved just how special their connection really was.

When Landry calls and interrupts Matt’s first date with Julie, he knows he needs a good reason, and he has one: Grandma Saracen has locked herself in a closet and the only person who can get her out is Joel, her dead husband. In that moment, Matt deepens his voice a bit to play the role of Joel and sings “Mr. Sandman” to coax her out of the closet.

It works, and Julie’s heart melts along with the rest of us. But for the actors, it was a scene they weren’t sure would work. During episode 2 of EW’s Binge podcast on Friday Night Lights, Zach Gilford reveals that he worried the scene would make Matt too much of a “wuss.” And for Louanne Stephens, she says, “You never know as an actor whether it’s going to work. I was nervous about it.”

In the end, they were both happy with the results, but Stephens does have one lingering question: “How did she lock herself in from the inside?” It’s a solid point. But we’ll stick with Stephens when she says, “I’m just going to say that she was so nuts that she also installed a lock in there.”
