I read in snatches, when I just can’t bear to write anymore. I always try to read fiction and nonfiction at the same time. Right now, I’m reading a book called Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, an extraordinary book by a guy called John Berendt. It takes place in Savannah, Ga., and it’s nonfiction but reads like fiction, about a guy who was tried four times for murder and got off. It’s essentially a travelogue. Actually, it’s made me think I might like to go to Savannah. The other book I’m reading is a political biography, Richard Reeves’ President Kennedy, which is extremely thoroughly researched. It depicts JFK as ruthless and cunning and yet also as a very likable and amusing person you’d want to know.
