Kanye West really wants you to like Mr. Hudson: Do you?

Kanyewestmrhudson_lWhen Kanye West tells you to like something, you listen. Or at least Ido. The man’s got a pretty reliable track record when it comes tospotting talent: Common, John Legend, Kid Cudi, to name a few. Yeezy iscurrently conducting the hype train for his latest find:British pop-soul singer Mr. Hudson (whose first name is Ben). Westsigned the Brit to his G.O.O.D. Music label, asked him to collaborateon a number of 808’s & Heartbreak tracks (including “Paranoid”),and has been the captainof the Mr. Hudson cheerleading squad ever since. Since West is obviouslynostranger to hyperbole, as he’s already lavished praise on him like “he couldbeone of the most important artists of his generation.”

With all the hype, it’s easy to lose track of the music. Thankfully,West has finally premiered Mr. Hudson’s first track off his forthcomingStraight No Chaser album, scheduled to drop in August. The tune, called”Supernova,” definitely shows promise, sounding like a Euro-synthpopanthem by way of the Polyphonic Spree. The song’s slow-burn hip-hopbeat builds nicely toward the auto-tuned rhymes from West himself, whoof course guests on the track. And even though I’m sure Jamie Lidell could wipe the floor with him in a sing-off, Mr. Hudson isn’t really a true soul singer. He’s instead got a multi-faceted tone to his voice that’s transcends several different genres of music. While declarations like “one of the mostimportant artists” always tend to turn me off (I’m talking aboutyou, Janelle Monae), I’m definitely digging Mr. Hudson enough to keep an eye onhis album. What do you all think? Does the strange-bedfellow pairing ofKanye West and Mr. Hudson intrigue you, or does the hype turn you off? What do you think of “Supernova”?
