Bee Gees stage musical officially in the works

A Bee Gees musical could soon be on the way.

Jimmy Horowitz, president of Universal Pictures, announced Wednesday that Universal Theatrical Group has acquired the rights to develop a stage musical based on the life story and music of the Bee Gees. UTG reached an agreement with Barry Gibb, Yvonne Gibb, and the estate of Robin Gibb, with Barry set to serve as executive producer.

One of the most popular musical groups of the 1970s, the Bee Gees were known for their breakout pop and disco songs. The Grammy-winning band wrote all of their own hits and have sold more than 220 million records worldwide, among the most of music-selling artists in history. Of the three principal Gibb brothers, only Barry is still alive.

An official Bee Gees musical has yet to come together despite years of attempts. (Around a decade ago, producer Steve Wynn entered into an agreement with Barry and Robin Gibb.) Their soundtrack to the film Saturday Night Fever was a huge success, however, and was eventually adapted into a stage musical.
