Guys, GUYS. What is even happening with these live eliminations this season? First Jon Mero, and now this? It’s madness, it really is.
Let’s start from the top.
The first two artists to get through tonight are of course Chloe Kohanski and Addison Agen. They both had undeniably good performances and killed it with downloads, so that’s a no-brainer. They’ve been consistent bright spots all season, and frankly, it’s a good thing they’re still here.
After they’re waved through, we get to hear Team Miley’s all-girl squad assemble for a rendition of Shania Twain’s “Man! I Feel Like a Woman,” and while they all tell us through lyrics that it’s their “prerogative to have a little fun,” not a single one of them seems to be doing as much. Maybe it’s their unflattering cheetah costumes or the fact that only Miley and Ashland Craft are actually in their comfort zone here, or maybe it’s just the fact that none of them have made it through yet. But for whatever reason, this is an awkward and forced group performance.
We then learn about all the pet names and quirks of the remaining 11 singers — Red Marlow’s got “a pocket full of sayings,” Davon Fleming runs around acting like “a cartoon character,” and Janice Freeman is at full-on drama status at all times — before the next two are saved: Brooke Simpson and Davon Fleming. Each of these two were solid enough last night that this isn’t much of a surprise. They might’ve had some momentary misses, but they’ve proven themselves time and time again this season.
Then, after Team Adam assembles to sing “Go Your Own Way” — with each of the three literally going their own ways throughout the song, as each of the guys forgets the lyrics — we learn that Red Marlow and Noah Mac have advanced. Whether or not everyone “gets” these guys, they seem to have developed enough of a following to keep getting votes.
Blake Shelton hosts Jennifer Hudson for a duet of his latest single, “I’ll Name the Dogs,” and while we can hardly hear her contribution to the bit, it’s fine enough all the same.
The last singers to earn a spot in the top 10 without a fight are Ashland Craft (head, meet desk), Keisha Renee (who seemed unsure that she’d get this pass), and Shi’Ann Jones (whose future was also uncertain).
That leaves Adam Cunningham and Janice Freeman in the bottom two, which…wow. (Recap continues on page 2)
Adam Cunningham was better and more at home with “American Girl” yesterday than he was last week, but since he didn’t get the votes and downloads to make it through then, it’s not too much of a jaw-dropper that he’s here again. But Janice?
Sure, Janice wasn’t at the top of her game during her rendition of “Shine” yesterday, and she does tend to beat a dead horse when it comes to so many screeches, but she’s still more authentic and interesting than at least three of the singers who got called up before her. Sigh.
For the save-me performances, Adam wisely chooses a solid crowd-pleaser in Lonestar’s “Amazed,” which has no doubt featured prominently in most weddings south of the Mason-Dixon for the past two decades, so everyone knows it. His voice is a good match for this song, too — even if he still struggles with those high notes and feels the inexplicable need to yell when he’s trying to rile up the audience, it’s still consumable for the couch crowd.
Janice, on the other hand, aims way too high by choosing Sia’s “Chandelier,” which is already impossible enough without her being this emotional. There’s nothing nice to say about this performance, really. She’s pitchy, she misses some important notes in the chorus, and she seems completely unrehearsed.
Based on their instant save performances alone, Adam Cunningham deserves to win. Based on everything else, this is as much of an upset as last week’s elimination.
This season is wild.
