Sony Pictures is nearly ready to introduce Tom Hardy’s Eddie Brock. The first Venom poster dropped Wednesday with a familiar design, the film’s official logo, and the announcement of something sinister coming Thursday — which we can only imagine being the first trailer.

Last month, the studio unveiled the first image of Hardy’s titular character and some clues as to what to expect from the Spider-Man-based film, directed by Ruben Fleischer.

In the comics, Eddie is a rival reporter to Peter Parker. His body is taken over by an alien symbiote that transforms him into the villain known as Venom. In later comics, the character is more of an anti-hero, and that seems to be the tone Fleischer is looking to strike.

The Venom film will be based primarily on the Venom: Lethal Protector and Planet of the Symbiotes comic arcs. The first-look image revealed Eddie investigating The Life Foundation, an organization in the comics that used the symbiotes to create additional Venom-esque creatures.

Hardy is joined in the cast by Michelle Williams, Riz Ahmed, Scott Haze, and Reid Scott.

Topher Grace previously appeared as Venom in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 3, while Ryan Kwanten portrayed Eddie in an unofficial short film from Adi Shankar.

Scott Rosenberg, Jeff Pinkner, Kelly Marcel, and Will Beall penned the script for Venom, which is produced by Avi Arad, Matt Tolmach, and Amy Pascal. David Householter and Stan Lee are executive producers.

The film is scheduled for theaters on Oct. 5, 2018.
