Animated Mario movie coming from Nintendo and Illumination

Mario is coming back to the big screen. More than 20 years after everyone’s favorite plumber starred in the live-action Super Mario Bros. movie, Nintendo announced Thursday that it is developing a new Mario film. This one will be animated, and created in partnership with Illumination Entertainment, the studio behind Despicable Me and The Secret Life of Pets. It is being produced by Mario’s original creator, Shigeru Miyamoto, along with Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri, and distributed by Universal.

No information about the plot, cast, or release date is available at this time. The 1993 live-action film starred Bob Hoskins as the adventurous plumber and John Leguizamo as his brother Luigi.

The announcement comes amidst a good time for Mario fans. Just a few months ago, Nintendo released their first Mario game for the Switch console, Super Mario Odyssey. The game met with acclaim from fans and critics alike; EW’s A review described it as “a Mario lover’s dream.”
