It was announced Tuesday that the latest film in the hugely successful Purge franchise will be called The First Purge. In this prequel, America’s leaders, the New Founding Fathers of America (NFFA) test a sociological theory which involves allowing aggression to be vented for one night in an isolated community. But when the violence of oppressors meets the rage of the marginalized, the contagion explodes beyonds the borders of the trial city and spreads across the nation.

The First Purge is directed by Gerard McMurray and written by James DeMonaco, who both wrote and directed the previous three films in the franchise, beginning with 2013’s The Purge. This new film stars Y’Lan Noel, Lex Scott Davis, Joivan Wade, Luna Lauren Velez and Marisa Tomei. The First Purge is released, July 4.
